Meet Liz Alonzo – Our New Director of Religious Education
Hello, my name is Liz Alonzo. I am the new Director of Religious Education. My parents are from Galesburg, IL. My father served in the U.S. Army and I grew up in Germany. I was baptized when my mother joined the Catholic Church through RCIA. Mom took my little sister and me to Adoration, Rosary group, and choir. I loved visiting Jesus in Adoration. I enjoyed hiking, playing soccer, dance, and scouting.
At age 13, I fell in love with Jesus and promised to serve Him and His Church. I studied Spanish (five years) and Theology in high school to get ready for a life of works of mercy to God’s people. I love St. Francis of Assisi’s simplicity and have worn a San Damiano crucifix since I was a teenager.
I gave up a full-ride scholarship to study Math and came to Quincy University to study Theology, Education, and History (which I find fascinating). I married while attending college. The marriage was abusive and was declared null by the Church. I am blessed by good neighbors and friends who are a loving community for me and my four children: Anthony (13), Philomena (11), Damien (10), and Michael (8).
I graduated Quincy University in 2008. I spent a year in Texas helping family. I came back to Quincy because I was very homesick for Adams County, my adult home. I went to work at Ss. Brigid (Liberty), Edward (Mendon), and Joseph (rural Quincy) as their Coordinator of Religious Education in 2009 and served there over twelve years. I am experienced in coordinating RCIA, PSR, Adult Faith Formation, Sacramental Preparation, and ministering to youth. I support Catholic education as a substitute teacher at St. Dominic, where my children attend. Before Catholic School, our family attended public school and homeschooled. My favorite part of my job is being with people praying, listening, learning, and teaching. I look forward to sharing these gifts and talents with St. Francis Parish and School. I enjoy helping people fall in love with Jesus Christ and His Church and live the greatest adventure!
I feel very at home with the German Catholic roots of Quincy and St. Francis Solanus. I am thankful and delighted to get to serve and serve with this vibrant and historic parish.
