St. Francis School News – September 22, 2017

Next week, on Wednesday, September 27th, we will be celebrating the feast day of St. Vincent de Paul at Mass.  As you know, St. Vincent cared for the poor and homeless in the later years of his life.  He inspired others to start the St. Vincent de Paul Society for those in need.  Please help us to celebrate with St. Vincent in doing our part by having your child bring some kind of nonperishable item to donate to our food pantry.  Any canned foods, paper products,  or even hygiene products would be wonderful.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful for each and every student to take part in this celebration?  It makes us all Disciples of Christ and unifies us as a Catholic, Christian school.  It will be wonderful to see how the children and you have responded when we see all of those items at the foot of the altar!  Thank you for your generosity!

Sincerely yours,  Carla Slough and Grade 4

Mr. Zanger’s 7th grade Geography classes are doing local history reports.

The topics are: the St. Francis Solanus fire in 1899, the history of Quincy Catholic Elementary Schools and local veterans.  We would like to collect any information on the fire and the local Catholic Elementary schools our families have.  If you have information on those topics, please contact the St. Francis School office at (217)-222-4027 ext 220, and ask for Mr. Zanger.  Seventh Grade students will be interviewing local veterans in the coming weeks and hope to highlight them at Grandparent’s Day this year.   Thank you from the seventh grade class.

Playground Duty: Parents please do not park by Underbrinks during recess.  They have asked us to keep the street clear for their clientele to park there. Thank you for your understanding.

Dropping off items:  if you have an item to be dropped off for your child (lunch, iPad, etc.) please drop it off in the office for the staff to deliver.  This helps keep disruption of the classroom to a minimum and our building secure.

SCHOOL MALL: Envelopes have been sent home with your student.  Please fill out the information and turn it back into the school sometime next week.  This is a great fundraiser for Home and School.  Thank you!

Boys ACES Basketball Tryouts:

ACES is a basketball organization for 5th & 6th grade boys who would eventually like to play high school basketball at Quincy Notre Dame.  Teams play primarily on weekends from November through February.  Because it is a “traveling” team, ACES plays mostly out of town in such cities as Macomb, Palmyra, Galesburg, Hannibal, and sometimes in the metro St. Louis area.  The cost per player is $150. There is no guaranteed playing time in games as there is in leagues such as the YMCA or CYO.   We play approximately 25-30 games per year, often getting more than one game per travel date. Boys should make every effort to attend both nights of tryouts if possible.

Please direct any questions to Tom VanderBor at 653-8377 or [email protected].

Cookie Dough Fundraiser: It is time for our annual cookie dough sale. Please support our school for another year!  Cookie dough is always a big help heading into the holiday baking season. This fundraiser is on of the best as our school receives at least 50% profit.  All orders must be turned in by Monday, October 16th.  The top three (3) salespersons will receive a Gene Grawe Gift Card.  Thank you for your support!
