St. Francis School News – May 3, 2019

Celebration of Life for James Ariel: will be held Friday, May 3rd at 6:30 p.m. at QU Stadium.  Mr. Ariel was a student teacher with Mr. Carey.  He was a wonderful attribute to QU, QND, and St. Francis.  The students enjoyed his teaching and his great personality.

Award Assembly– On May 2, we were honored to hand out a variety of scholarships to our students from some very generous families to benefit their Catholic education.  These scholarships are in memory of their loved ones, and the students are so very grateful to have gotten the awards.  The following students were selected:

  • Gabe Mason- 2nd grade, Knuffman Award ($500.00)
  • MacKenzie Flachs- 8th grade, Cox Award ($500.00)
  • Dylan Schrage- 8th grade, Hinkamper Award ($500.00)
  • Haley Mayer- 8th grade, Scholz Award ($750.00)
  • Jacob Schisler- 8th grade, Scholz Award ($750.00)
  • Allie Vranjes- 6th grade, Prater Award ($2,600.00 for 2 years)
  • Isabella Bickhaus- 8th grade, Fischer ($3,000.00 for the next 4 years)

These awards have been provided by the following families:  Richard and Elizabeth Cox, Robert and Louise Fischer, Marilyn and Steve Prater, Chris Knuffman, Ron Hinkamper, and the late Judge Richard Scholz. Congratulations to our award winners!  We are confident they will represent our school in the best way possible. During the assembly, students were also given awards for Stewardship, the School Play, and participating in School Mall.  Thank you to all of the presenters, and especially to the parents who attended!

PTO MEETING: Thursday, May 9th at 6:00 in the Parish Hall.  This meeting is for voting on next year’s officers.

7th Grade Trivia Contest at QND– Congratulations to our 7th grade students who beat Blessed Sacrament in the first round, and then in the second round, beat St. Peter to win the overall Trivia Contest!  The traveling trophy will be at our school for one year on display, and then will be up for the winning team next year.  We are so proud of Denver Bryan, Paul Steinkamp, Myah Venvertloh, and Grace Real. These students have represented our school in the best way possible!

Steel Drum Performance– A special thank you to the students from Western Illinois University for a fabulous performance for our PreK-8th grade students at a recent assembly.  Students greatly enjoyed the music, and the description of how the drums were crafted and played was quite educational.  This event was possible through Arts Dollars from the Quincy Society of Fine Arts.

Open Position at St. Francis Solanus School-

St. Francis Solanus is accepting applications for the 6-8th grade religion position.  This position could also include 2 classes of 6th grade English, depending on the applicants’ credentials.  Resumes and inquiries may be sent to Lori Shepard at St. Francis Solanus School, 1720 College, Quincy, Illinois, 62301.  Or, applicants may send information to [email protected]  All applicants must have current Illinois certification, or be willing to obtain one.

QCES Curriculum Mapping

The Blessed Sacrament, St. Dominic, St. Francis, and St. Peter prekindergarten through eighth grade teachers are proud to announce that they have completed science curriculum maps.  They have created QCES maps that have common standards, essential questions, content and skills.  In addition, each school has expanded maps containing specific technology, assessment and resources.  Over the next month each school will meet to give their final stamp of approval on the curriculum.  They will also discuss the next steps including implementation and collaboration.

We want to thank all the parents and volunteers who helped to put our St. Francis Play on again this year.
Linda Dawson, Misty Cramsey, & Glen Chandler for 10 years of their time, and Diana Real for 4 years.   We want to also thank Quincy Community Theater for all the costumes and props, without your support, this production would not have happened. Thank you Heather Schmitz, Terri Liesen, Debra Beard, Jayna  Klauser, John Schmitz, Casey Robertson, Kelly Pierceall, Sara Kapp, and Amy Hinkamper, for being our backstage help, working concessions and building our sets.Thank you to our Alumni helpers: Samantha Cramsey, Olivia Hummel, Jackson Real, Sarah Steinkamp, Savannah Real, and Hayden Donaldson. Thanks for coming back and spending time with us. We would also like to thank our custodial staff Mark and Rich.

BINGO PRIZES NEEDED: The Parish Picnic committee is collecting prizes once again for this year’s picnic.

A flyer went home this week for items needed per class. Thank you for your donation and making BINGO a success. A jean day (with out of dress code shirt )will be held on Friday, May 10th for those who donated a prize.

QND FATHEAD Raffle:  Buy a chance or two to win a QND / ND logo fathead for your room (24”x24”).  Chances are being sold for $1 each or 6 for $5.  All proceeds will benefit the 8th grade class trip!  Thanks and Good Luck! (this is a removable sticker that can be used over and over)

QND Spring Choral Concert – Monday, May 6, 7:00 pm in the KROC Center Worship Space.

The Concert Chorale, Mixed Chorus, Men’s & Women’s Glee, and Madrigal Choir will present a concert under the direction of Monica Scholz, accompanied by Robert March. Admission is free and everyone is invited to come and listen to our talented choristers!

Parochial Music Organization Spring Band and Choral Concert – Thursday, May 9, 7:00 pm in the QND Gymnasium.  Students in the PMO Band program, grades 5-8 and the PMO Choral program, grades 4-8, will present a spring concert. Admission is free, but free-will donations will be happily accepted.  Come and enjoy our music!  PMO bands are directed by Sara Reeder and Jill Steinkamp, and PMO Choirs are directed by Monica Scholz and accompanied by Robert March.


  • May 9th – Olympic Day grades 5-8 (MUST WEAR OLYMPIC DAY SHIRT) -pack lunch and drinks, sunscreen, umbrella, and tennis shoes

  • May 11th : Spaghetti Dinner 4:00 to 8:00 in Parish Hall (tickets at the rectory
